Share Memories

Share memories

A living public history project such as this needs nourishment! It is only as effective as its ability to engage with those of you who have memories, stories, photographs to share. If people’s stories of Uptown teach us anything at all, it is that “submerged traditions” of narrativizing everyday stories that are not captured by History (with a capital H) always exist. It is merely a matter of tapping into and elevating them. James Baldwin once said, “You’ve got to tell the world how to treat you. If the world tells you how you are going to be treated, you are in trouble.” Stories and memories of Uptown’s history that are told from the perspective of the people of Uptown are a key part of this narrative. They capture stories of gentrification and displacement but not only that; they capture active place-making, resilience, and solidarity, every day, in ways big and small. We hope this site and the various projects embedded in it provide one small window to amplify this and capture people’s stories of Uptown: marking less-marked spaces and sharing less-told stories about this neighborhood, and through this, rewriting often-told histories… from the margins. To realize this goal, we would love to hear your stories and memories. Please share them with us!
